Brazilian Mobile Carrier Oi Deploys Ditech Networks Solution to Improve Voice Quality at the 2007 Pan American Games

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ditech Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: DITC) , a leader in the development of voice processing systems for communications networks, today announced that Oi deployed Ditech solutions to ensure voice quality for users of its mobile phone network during the recent 2007 Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

During the two-week competition, the region attracted more than 40,000 sports fans from around the world. For Oi, this posed several challenges, such as maintaining high-quality mobile calls in noisy crowds and providing high-level service to foreign visitors who are roaming with GSM mobile devices. Oi chose to implement Ditech's Voice Quality Assurance (VQA) solution that improves the call experience for both current subscribers in addition to the thousands of travelers who visited Rio de Janeiro.

Ditech's VQA solution reduces background noise and echo on every call while simultaneously adjusting voice levels. Additionally, it allows Oi to better utilize speech compression technology, which is a cost-effective method to increase network capacity to support a surge in mobile phone users. The combination of improved voice quality in noisy, crowded conditions with an increase in network capacity gave Oi a cost-effective, high-value solution for supporting mobile subscribers during the 2007 Pan American Games.

"Ditech's VQA solution allows Oi to provide high-value mobile service even under the kind of extreme conditions found during the Pan American Games," said Oi Engineering Director Antonio Parrini. "Not only can Oi deliver improved voice quality, but Ditech's solution lets us make greater use of half-rate codecs to increase network capacity."

"The demand for mobile service in Latin America is growing significantly," said Todd Simpson, Vice President of Marketing for Ditech Networks. "Adding capacity for a worldwide sporting event like the 2007 Pan American Games makes supporting this growth even more challenging. Oi has solved the problem of rapid subscriber growth with improved voice quality and Ditech is proud to be part of the company family."

Oi ("Hello" in Portuguese) is the largest private corporation in Brazil and an official sponsor of the Pan American Games. The company provides mobile phone service to over 13.4 million customers throughout 16 states, including the Rio area and the athletic venues used during the Pan American Games.
