Vitali Klitschko to Run for Mayor of Kiev, Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Vitali Klitschko, the honorable world champion boxer under the WBC division, announced his intention to run for mayor of Kiev on 20 March. According to the Ukrainian press and media, Klitschko's main competitor is the current mayor of Kiev-Leonid Chernovetsky. The decision to hold early elections for Mayor and city council was made by the Supreme council of Ukraine on 18 March 2008. Elections are to take place on 25 May 2008. Kiev is Ukraine's capital, country that located in the center of the Eastern Europe. Total area of Kiev -- 835, 6 sq. km. Population -- 2718.8 thousand people.

Klitschko is considered the most favorable candidate from the democratic coalition to run for Mayor. According to the polls, 25.2% of the people said they will vote for Vitali Klitschko and 24.9% for Chernovetsky.

Since Klitschko started his political career in 2005 he has accomplished much for the city of Kiev and its residents including February 2007 when Klitschko prevented an increase in the municipal fees. Klitschko first campaigned for the office of Mayor on an anti-corruption platform.
