Updated Design Reduces Carbon Footprint and Increases Cost Savings
BOULDER, Colo., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to explore solutions that are both good for the planet and business, International Delight recently introduced new packaging that hit store shelves this month. The redesign took place to meet consumer demands for an easier-to-use cap while reducing the brand's environmental impact. In doing so, the new International Delight bottle reduces the brand's carbon footprint by 30 percent.
In the past, consumers had complained about leaking and dripping from the bottle cap. The new bottle design sports a fresh, modern look which solves the leaking problem while integrating a new sustainable, plastic that requires less energy and water to produce.
Addressing the product packaging was only one facet of the redesign. Suppliers and transportation were also critical to the process. The team chose a bottle cap supplier closer to the International Delight manufacturing plant which ultimately saved 157,652 transportation miles and approximately 31,530 gallons of fuel a year. The bottle caps are also shipped using reusable totes, eliminating the use of 279,720 cardboard cases which is equivalent to saving 793 trees annually.
"We're really proud of this redesign because we didn't stop at the bottle. Not only did we fix our lid problem, we did it in a way that saved money and reduced energy usage and waste," said Trevor Bynum, vice president of marketing at WhiteWave Foods. "We feel strongly that creating things that are good for the environment can and do make good business sense."
To further support its sustainability efforts, International Delight is purchasing wind energy credits from Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit organization. These credits offset the electricity used in manufacturing the plastic used to make the product bottle.
