As the Spring 2009 Semester Begins, Chegg.com Commits to Planting a Tree for Every Textbook Rented, Bought or Sold
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Chegg.com is proud to announce, in partnership with American Forests, it has planted over 750 acres, the equivalent of 150 city blocks, of trees in 2008 in nearly a dozen of American Forests' Global ReLeaf environmental restoration projects located across the United States.
Although already providing an environmentally friendly service which allows students to rent and return textbooks for others to use in the future, Chegg.com also plants a tree for every book a student rents, buys or sells. The more students rent, buy or sell their textbooks through Chegg.com, the more Chegg.com is able to help replace the many trees used in textbook production.
"Although textbooks are a vital part of our business, Chegg.com keeps the environment and the forests in general as a top priority," said Osman Rashid, CEO of Chegg.com. "We are proud to have planted over 750 acres of trees and look forward to continuing to help the environment in 2009 as students rent, buy or sell textbooks from Chegg.com. In partnership with American Forests we hope to plant more trees in 2009 to put a larger dent into what the textbook production industry is taking from our environment."
Planting trees ensures a healthy future for Chegg.com students. According to the World Bank, deforestation accounts for up to 20 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. By renting textbooks, students reduce the number of new books printed and the demand for new sources of fiber paper each year.
"On behalf of Chegg.com's customers, American Forests is proud to have planted trees in ten states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, South Carolina and Texas," said Greg Meyer at American Forests. "We applaud companies like Chegg.com who are taking steps to help replenish the forests as well as educate customers on the environment."
Chegg.com is helping students achieve a healthy environment and save money. Chegg.com allows college students to rent as many textbooks as they like with just a few clicks, delivering them straight to students' doors. By renting textbooks through Chegg.com, students can save up to 80 percent or $650 per semester on their textbook bills. The online option also eliminates time spent waiting in lines at the bookstores. Students also have the ability to buy, not just rent, textbooks over Chegg.com and know at the time of purchase the exact amount of cash they will receive at the end of the semester if they so choose to sell the book back to Chegg.com.
