NEW YORK, Feb. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Jewish Committee today called on the National Republican Party to disassociate itself from a recent statement by the Tennessee Republican Party seeking to tar Senator Barack Obama through guilt by association and innuendo.
"Attempts of this sort to mislead and inflame voters should not be part of our political discourse and should be rebuffed by all who believe in our democracy," said Jeffrey Sinensky, AJC's general counsel.
"Of course, voters should support whichever candidate they believe would make the best president, but those decisions should be based on the factual records of the candidates, and nothing less," Sinensky said.
The American Jewish Committee is a nonpartisan organization that neither supports nor opposes candidates for public office.
