WHAT: One Day's Pay, a prominent nonprofit group urging Americans to
observe 9/11 as a national day of voluntary service, will hold a
major press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 16 in New York City to
kick off its campaign for the 5th anniversary of the Sept. 11,
2001 terrorist attacks. The organization will preview national
television and radio public service announcements narrated by a
well-known actor and long-time advisor to the organization; unveil
a new initiative and Web site, http://www.mygooddeed.org/, and announce
significant new partnerships. The organization is supported by
more than 20 leading 9/11 family and support groups.
U.S. Representative Peter King, chair of the House Committee on
Homeland Security, and U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, both
members of the nonprofit's Honorary Congressional Advisory Board,
will be on hand to help kick off this important and heartfelt
campaign.
The nonprofit organization also will release results of an
independent national research study that assesses the attitudes of
Americans nationwide on 9/11 and their feelings nearly five years
later. Sample survey topics: To what extent has the nation
changed since 9/11 in terms of its sense of compassion for others?
What percent of Americans remain troubled by their feelings each
9/11?

WHY: myGoodDeed.org hopes to create a constructive way for people to
remember 9/11 and leave a lasting legacy in tribute to the
victims, families, brave heroes and tireless volunteers. Visitors
to the Web site may post their pledge to perform at least one good
deed of their own choosing in observance of 9/11. There is no
cost or obligation to post a pledge on myGoodDeed.org, and all
information is kept confidential. Ultimately, the group hopes to
annually rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that existed
in the nation after the tragedy.
