WASHINGTON, May 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) today praised the sponsors of the Domestic Energy Production Act of 2008, which was introduced yesterday in the U.S. Senate, for proposing domestic supply as an important component to a comprehensive energy policy.
"It is critical that our leaders grasp the reality that our energy security challenges have to be met with comprehensive solutions encompassing both supply and demand," SAFE President and CEO Robbie Diamond said. "Expanding domestic supply, particularly from the Outer Continental Shelf, is one part of that comprehensive solution. Until long-term efforts to reduce demand and encourage the use of alternatives dramatically reduce the oil intensity of the U.S. economy, expanding safe and reliable domestic supplies of oil and natural gas will be critical to continued prosperity and security."
Among other provisions, the legislation -- introduced by Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee ranking member Pete Domenici (R-NM) and co-sponsored by 19 other senators -- would allow petitions for development in the Atlantic and Pacific regions of the Outer Continental Shelf.
"Our leaders cannot afford to ignore this issue," Diamond added. "Our energy security vulnerabilities are putting our nation and our future at risk. Serious solutions that transcend partisan politics and entrenched interests are the only way we will solve this problem. Domestic supply is only one part of a wider solution, but it is nevertheless an important step toward improved U.S. energy security."
Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) is an action-oriented, nonpartisan organization that aims to reduce America's dependence on oil and improve U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy.
