WASHINGTON, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Bahrain's Foreign Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, and US Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Nuclear Energy Cooperation between the United States and Bahrain.
The signature of this MOU is an important element in Bahrain's overall development strategy. It aims to ensure the stability and diversity of its energy supplies, which is critically important for the continuing growth of Bahrain's energy-intensive industries in light of declining domestic hydrocarbon resources and a tightening international market.
Bahrain is fully cognizant of and committed to its obligations to the GCC, the international community, its neighbors and its own citizens to ensure that development of civilian nuclear energy takes place in a manner that ensures safety, non-proliferation and peaceful use. The Kingdom of Bahrain would like to declare that its activities will be in line with its commitments to the IAEA. In this respect, Bahrain's cooperation with the United States under this MOU is fully consistent with its obligations under the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty, to which Bahrain remains fully committed.
