OXFORD, Conn., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- BrachySciences launched http://www.psascreening.com/ today as a program in partnership with the healthcare community to provide men, and their families, with information on screening facilities. This is part of their Prostate Cancer Awareness Month initiative to help men get diagnosed, treated, and back to living their lives. During the month some facilities will be conducting complimentary and/or discounted, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) examinations.
This year over 232,000(1) men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Each diagnosis consists of a blood test, often referred to as a PSA test, as well as a digital rectal examination.
"We are proud to launch http://www.psascreening.com/," says Jim Matons, president of BrachySciences. "Raising awareness and providing men and their families a convenient and private way to find a PSA screening center will help patients obtain an early diagnosis and receive the proper treatment they need."
The American Cancer Society recommends that all men begin prostate cancer screening annually beginning at age 50. African-American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should begin screening for cancer at age 45.1
"It is best to diagnose any cancer early, this is especially true with prostate cancer," stated Dr. Jeffrey Lopez, Radiation Oncologist at Tri-State Regional Cancer Center. He continued, "PSA screening is just a simple blood test, with quick results which will give men the peace of mind that they have done all that they can or the knowledge that their PSA level is normal."
Men, and their families, who are at risk for prostate cancer are encouraged to visit the website at http://www.psascreening.com/ to find a local screening facility. The site also provides information on prostate cancer and the different treatment options available.
