NEW YORK, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- PEOPLE en Espanol lands the first exclusive interview with Father Alberto Cutie and new wife Ruhama. The couple opens up about the scandal that unfolded when tabloids published compromising photos while he was still a Catholic priest. The issue also includes exclusive photos from their secret Miami wedding and honeymoon in Greece.
"I felt at peace, I wasn't nervous at all," remembers Cutie of the moment on June 26(th,) when he and his bride pledged their undying love for each other in front of 60 close friends and family members. "We were in heaven, as this is what we wanted most: exchanging vows that came from our heart and souls before God," added Ruhama.
The ceremony capped off a few grueling months of living in the spotlight. According to Cutie and Ruhama, what began as a friendship between a priest and a member of the parish for almost a decade, flourished into much more two years ago. "The wedding was really the one of my dreams. I always wanted to get married," assures Father Alberto. "Ever since I was young, I thought about being married one day and having children. And the truth is it wasn't until my adolescence that I decided I wanted to become a priest," he says.
But not everyone shares in the couple's happiness and some have even questioned his sexuality.
"Why go on insisting on something that is normal between a man and a woman? Why look for other things that aren't there?" he says. Cutie adds, "I never thought this would be exposed so publicly, that so many people would pass judgment. My mistake, perhaps, was to have waited [so long]," he confesses about not taking action with his romance sooner.
The former Catholic priest, who left the church a few months ago in order to get married, has now become an Episcopalian layperson and has 10 months of studying and tests ahead of him before he is received as a priest in the Episcopal Church. "I haven't changed because I am married now," he says, and believes he can actually become better in his new role in the Episcopalian church. "Those who choose not to accept that, fine, it's a free country. But for those who open heartedly accept the love and affection of others, we are here to serve you," he adds.
