Marriott Recognized with 2008 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

BETHESDA, Md., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott International, Inc. NYSE: MAR announced today that it has been recognized for the fourth consecutive year as a recipient of the 2008 ENERGY STAR "Partner of the Year" award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), earning Marriott the distinction of being named a partner of "Sustained Excellence" for the second consecutive year. Marriott is being recognized for its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency in an awards ceremony April 1, 2008, in Washington, D.C.

"We are proud to recognize Marriott's continued efforts with the 2008 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence award," said Robert J. Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air & Radiation. "Year after year partners like Marriott are examples of the benefits of a long-term commitment to energy efficiency. Their actions are leading the way in saving energy and helping to protect the environment."

The 2008 Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year. The winners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, employing innovative approaches, and showing others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR program including energy-efficient products, services, new homes and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. Award winners are selected from more than 9,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

Since 2004, Marriott has received the Partner of the Year Award for Excellence in Energy Management, and has been awarded more ENERGY STAR labels than any other hotel company. In 2005, Marriott proactively joined the prestigious EPA's Climate Leaders program. Last year, Marriott set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1 million cubic tons over 10 years by 2010.

Some of Marriott's energy-saving programs include retro-commissioning existing hotels, LEED certification for new hotels and implementing features such as: low flush toilets, energy demand response systems, fluorescent lighting and more.
