BOSTON, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Eons.com, a social network for boomers, released the latest results of its Sex & Intimacy Survey, gauging the sexual attitudes and activities of 10,000+ respondents ages 50 to 65. According to the survey, 87% of respondents report that sex is an important part of their lives, 45% report having sex at least once per week and 88% are interested in spicing up their sex lives by trying something "new." The data reveals that the "free love" generation of the 1960's still harbors the same open attitudes toward sex, communication and intimacy in their later years. The Eons.com Sex & Intimacy Survey dispels common misconceptions about sex after 50, and how boomers are openly discussing the formerly taboo topic of sex.
"Boomers are still shattering myths about health, sex drive and prowess," says Eons Founder and CEO Jeff Taylor. "They're not settling into a sexual rut. They're creating new passion in their lives, and celebrating their health and close relationships like never before."
Boomers are Sexually Active - 45% Report Having Sex at Least Once per Week Despite the long-held belief that sex becomes less important as people age:
-- Over 87% of respondents say that sex is an important part of their
lives.
-- Almost 45% of participants report having sex at least once per week.
-- Over 37% have had 10 or more sexual partners during their lifetime.
-- Three-quarters of respondents report practicing safe sex.
Boomers are Sexually Adventurous -- 88% are Willing to Try Something "New"
Trying new things in (and out) of the bedroom isn't just for young people. A vast majority (88%) would try something new to spice up their sex lives, including role-playing and other games, new sexual positions or sex in a different location than the bedroom. Of respondents who are married or in a long-term relationship, 23% are willing to invite a third person into their bedroom if their partner was game. Despite changing attitudes on many fronts, the majority of respondents (58%) still enjoy cuddling after sex, even after all these years.
Boomers are Sexually Satisfied -- 75% are "Completely Fulfilled"
Although most respondents report having the best sex during the first year of dating their partner, 18% say they're having the best sex now after turning 50. Close to 75% report reaching orgasm most of the time or every time during sex, and 44% report sex lasting between 20-30 minutes. Additionally, more than half (51%) of respondents use some kind of supplement for sex, including Viagra, personal lubricants, herbal supplements and hormones. Outside of sexual intercourse with a partner, most respondents (62%) also report engaging in self-gratification at least one or more times per month.
Evolving Attitudes -- 61% Would Become Intimate with a New Partner in the First Month
Waiting until marriage is now passe for most single boomers. The majority (61%) of respondents are willing to become physically intimate with new partners within the first month of dating, with 36% believing the second or third date is the most acceptable time to begin engaging in intimacy. Meanwhile, less than 4% plan on waiting until marriage to engage in sex with their partners.
Adopting the Internet to Spice Up Their Love Life
Boomers have embraced the Internet as an informational resource on sex with nearly 30% using it for sexual information or inspiration as well as for meeting new people. Though 37% say the best way to meet someone new is through a friend, 22% are turning to online dating sites for romance.
The annual Eons Sex & Intimacy Survey sampled the opinions of more than 10,000 Eons members as hosted on www.Eons.com. For the complete survey results, visit www.eons.com/sex.
