Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths claiming the lives of 57,000 individuals each year in the United States. This is second only behind lung cancer deaths. It is recommended that all individuals over the age of 50 be screened for colon cancer. However, only 30- 40% of this target population reports ever being screened. Further, the American Cancer Society has established a goal of increasing the percentage of individuals over the age of 50 being screened to 75% by 2015. Education is the key to increasing screening and saving lives.
