AFM Launches Petition Drive to Counter PFAW's 'Dump DOMA' Campaign

MERRIFIELD, Va., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Alliance for Marriage Foundation today launched a national petition drive to Protect DOMA in response to the People for the American Way's (PFAW) efforts to encourage Congressional Leadership to "Dump DOMA."

In November, the Alliance for Marriage Foundation began to lay the foundation for our Protect DOMA campaign on Capitol Hill, with the public launch of www.ProtectDOMA.org. AFM's campaign is deliberately designed to build on AFM's diverse and centrist coalition and to reach both Democratic and Republican members of the Congress.

Shortly thereafter, PFAW, one of the best known radical activist groups in the nation, launched a new web portal called "DumpDOMA.com" as their response to AFM's ProtectDOMA.org.

At PFAW's new DumpDOMA.com website, visitors are urged to send an electronic petition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid supporting repeal of federal DOMA:

Part of President-elect Obama's ambitious pro-equality platform is that he supports the repeal of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). But already, the anti-gay Right has launched a campaign to 'protect DOMA'...

Please take action right now to make sure Congress sends President-elect Obama the legislation to sign after he takes office.

People For the American Way's campaign to Dump DOMA is a comprehensive effort to get repeal legislation on the President-elect Obama's desk for signature. This is a long-term strategy that we know will be an uphill battle -- but, we must start now. Anti-equality groups are already pushing to keep DOMA in place, and we anticipate challenges with some red-state Democrats and the need to 'flip' some representatives and senators who voted to pass DOMA in 1996...

This PFAW petition campaign will undoubtedly be accompanied by an aggressive lobbying effort from radical activists on Capitol Hill to assure lock-step support within the Democrat caucus among new members, and to pressure those who voted to pass DOMA in 1996 to "flip" their votes.

PFAW was founded in 1981 by television producer and political activist Norman Lear specifically to attack conservative initiatives in Congress. In 1987, PFAW helped defeat the nomination of Supreme Court Nominee Robert Bork, and is one of the most powerful lobbying arms of the Far Left in Washington, opposing conservative judicial nominees who support marriage.

When a Massachusetts court created "same-sex" marriage, Catholic Charities in Boston was forced to shut down its adoption services program because Cardinal Sean O'Malley -- a member of the Advisory Board of the Alliance for Marriage -- refused to alter the program's 100 year old mission of placing children in homes with a home with a mother and a father. Rights of religion and conscience were trampled upon in the name of a brave new social, cultural and legal norm that denies the importance of mothers and fathers for children.

Today, the attack on the federal Defense of Marriage Act is really a national campaign by radical activists to export what was done to Catholic Charities to all fifty states. And what happened in Massachusetts is simply a foretaste of what is to come in our nation if we allow the federal Defense of Marriage Act to be repealed.
