USAID Provides Flood Assistance to Angola

WASHINGTON, April 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have provided an initial $50,000 for the purchase of emergency relief supplies and shelter materials for flood-affected populations in Angola.

Since late January, heavy rains in southern Angola have led to flooding, particularly affecting Cunene and Kuando Kubango provinces. The Government of Angola's (GOA) Civil Protection Unit (CPU) reported that the floods have killed at least 14 people and displaced more than 56,000 others in the two provinces. In addition, the floods have killed livestock and destroyed or damaged crops, roads, houses, and schools. The CPU indicated that the dispersed nature of the disaster and limited accessibility have hindered response efforts in Kuando Kubango province.

USAID's initial emergency funding will be directed to the non-governmental organization CARE for the purchase of emergency relief supplies and shelter materials to support flood-affected populations in the Cuito Cuanavale municipality of Kuando Kubango province.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with the GOA and humanitarian organizations to provide additional assistance based on identified humanitarian needs.
