The holiday season is a time for family gatherings and decorative homes. But in the excitement, safety is often overlooked. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, nearly 156,000 fires occur during the winter month's claiming almost 630 lives. The number of children injured and killed by fires more than doubles this time of year.
The consumer product safety commission estimates that about 3,300 home fires originate from extension cords each year - killing and injuring more than 300 people.
ESFI recommends the following important safety tips: Extension cords should not be used as a permanent power supply. Make sure extension cords are in good condition. Keep all outdoor extension cords clear of snow and standing water. Plug electric decorations into circuits protected by GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupter) Avoid danger spots for children near candles, fireplaces, trees and electrical connections. Counterfeit electrical products also pose safety risks. Avoid no-name electrical products or products sold at "deep discount stores." Look for a safety label from a reputable certification laboratory.
