Jury Selects 15 Projects that Set International Standard for Design

MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 1, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- The Atlantic & Pacific Development in Montgomery, Alabama has been selected for a 2008 CNU Charter Award, the first award recipient in Alabama.

The Congress for the New Urbanism jury, chaired by Andres Duany of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, stated the selected projects "reveal the power of well-executed urbanism to strengthen communities, achieve broader sustainability and create places worthy of respect and admiration."

The Atlantic & Pacific Development is 1 of only 5 winning projects either under construction or complete. The awarded projects are found in the U.S. and abroad including the Bahamas, India, Saudi Arabia, and Scotland.

Located on a former A&P Grocery store site, the 2.5 acre in-fill project replaced four disused buildings and a large asphalt parking lot in the historic Old Cloverdale neighborhood of Montgomery.

Designed by McAlpine Tankersley Architecture, the project includes 16 lofts, 18 retail-office spaces, and 8 cottage homes.

Known for its old-growth trees, historic homes, public parks, and local restaurants & galleries, Cloverdale's commercial area had suffered decades of neglect as suburban sprawl pulled retail & residential activity away.

City Loft Corporation sought to revitalize the area with the mixed-use project by creating unique residences, repairing pedestrian connectivity, and establishing outdoor dining areas & street-oriented shop fronts.

City Loft Corporation is an independent, multi-disciplinary development firm dedicated to the implementation of in-fill development to restore existing urban centers & responsible greenfield development as advocated by the New Urbanism.

Founded by Anna Lowder & Harvi Sahota, City Loft Corporation develops residential, retail, office, and civic spaces.

The husband-wife partners established the company after relocating from London. An M.A. graduate of London's Royal College of Art, Sahota has worked in fine art, design, art direction, and publishing. A former journalist and fashion designer, Lowder joins Sahota in the effort to communicate how the human experience correlates directly with sense of place and the built environment.

Lowder & Sahota have completed a variety of in-fill developments and are the Town Founders of Hampstead, a DPZ community currently under construction. The first phase of their Hampstead project features 80,000 sf of retail, office, and restaurant space, 40 homes, civic buildings, and the organic Hampstead Farms.
