Security Experts Announce New East Coast Computer Security Conference - SOURCE 2008

BOSTON, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Top members of the computer security industry -- some of whom haven't been together in 10 years -- are coming together for a new educational security conference: SOURCE 2008. The conference will take place March 12-14, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 575 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, Mass.

Keynote speakers for SOURCE 2008 include Steven Levy, author and a pioneer of technology journalism; and Dan Geer, chief scientist of Verdasys and computer security expert who has served in advisory roles for the Federal Trade Commission, the National Science Foundation, the Treasury Department, and the Department of Defense.

Special keynote guest will be Richard Clarke, internationally recognized expert on security who served the last three U.S. presidents as a senior White House Advisor.

The SOURCE 2008 curriculum was designed by security experts with deep industry roots, including former members of @stake, the NSA, and L0pht Heavy Industries, the security think tank. The intent was to create a conference that will help educate security and IT professionals and senior executives on the latest security trends while providing opportunities for attendees to network with industry thought leaders in an intimate, East Coast setting.

SOURCE includes three tracks: business, application security, and technology. Business track session speakers include the CEO's of several leading organizations such as Veracode, Qualys, and IOActive. Members of the venture capital community, including representatives from Atlas Venture and .406 Ventures will discuss strategies for successful entrepreneurship. The application security track features talks from internationally-known expert, Halvar Flake, a web application security panel moderated by Robert "RSnake" Hansen and other specialized sessions. Technology sessions consist of talks on a variety of different subjects, including SCADA, visualization, the TOR Project, and other relevant tools and technologies.

"Many of the conferences in the industry take place on the West Coast and are just too big for professionals and executives to spend quality time networking and meeting one-on-one with security experts," said Stacy Thayer, founder of SOURCE Boston. "With SOURCE, we are providing an alternative for enterprises, security and professionals and executives that want security training and education closer to home."

SOURCE 2008 also will feature a panel discussion from members of the renowned L0pht Heavy Industries. For the first time in ten years, key members of the L0pht, including Mudge, Weld Pond, Dildog, Silicosis, and Space Rogue, will come together to discuss computer security in a public forum. The L0pht appeared before the Senate Subcommittee on Government Cyber Security on May 19, 1998. They said, among other things, that they could take down the Internet in 30 minutes and were praised by the U.S. senators for bringing the serious need for Internet security to light.

"I am excited to be participating in Source 2008 as a member of the advisory committee and as part of the L0pht reunion panel" said Chris Wysopal, founder and CTO of Veracode, and former member of the L0pht. "The industry has changed and top experts in security are no longer in groups like the L0pht. Instead, they have populated the industry in a sort of diaspora and are now at corporations, working in IT, or as consultants, or for governments. We will be gathering together at Source 2008 in Boston to discuss security trends and share advice in an intimate setting."
