REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
-- Oracle today contributed the XQilla XQuery engine code, an embeddable
XQuery engine for developers building XML-based applications, under the
open source Apache 2.0 license.
-- By making XQilla XQuery engine available to developers under the Apache
license, Oracle is furthering the adoption of XQuery and XML for
application areas including Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and
Enterprise Content Management.
-- The XQilla XQuery engine, an implementation of the XQuery 1.0 standard
published by the W3C, enables developers to query XML data, similar to
SQL for relational data.
-- Developers can use the XQilla XQuery engine in commercial and open
source applications at no cost, modify and improve it, as well as
distribute it in binary and source code form.
-- The XQilla project is hosted on SourceForge, where an active community
collaborates to further the technology.
-- For applications requiring XQuery and an XML document repository,
Oracle has also integrated XQilla XQuery engine within Oracle Berkeley
DB XML, an embeddable, open source XML database.

Supporting Quotes
-- "Oracle has a long-standing commitment to the open source community and
continues to actively contribute to, enhance, and support open source
software," said Monica Kumar, senior director Linux and Open Source
Product Marketing, Oracle. "Through collaboration with other
organizations to enhance code like XQilla, Oracle is embracing and
offering open source solutions as a viable choice for development and
deployment across the platforms and applications that support our
customers' businesses."
-- "XQuery will play an increasingly important role in the future of
information processing," said Dana Florescu, Oracle Architect, and co-
author of the XQuery specification. "A commercial-grade XQuery
processor broadly available for use by developers is an important
enabler in the next generation of XML applications."
-- "Oracle is a supporter of the W3C in general and XQuery in particular,"
said Jim Melton, consulting member of technical staff, Oracle and co-
chair of W3C XML Query Working Group. "XQilla has a reputation as a
very high quality XQuery engine. Its developers respond quickly to
changes in the specifications, providing essential implementation
feedback into the process of developing the Recommendations. Through
their efforts, the quality of XQuery and related specifications has
been greatly improved."
-- "Through joint collaboration with Oracle we were able to build a robust
XQuery engine that benefits the community of XML application
developers," said Philip Allen, Chairman, DecisionSoft. "Projects like
this demonstrate the power of collective thinking and the value open
source projects can bring to the larger developer and open source
community."
