LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At the 2008 International CES, Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIMG) , a leader in semiconductors for the secure storage, distribution and presentation of high-definition content, today announced a series of new technologies, supporting products and services that support the company's mission of delivering digital content everywhere.
"This year's announcements reflect our continued commitment to delivering rich entertainment experiences anytime, anywhere," said Steve Tirado, president and CEO of Silicon Image. "Through advanced HD solutions for mobile, HDTVs and storage, we continue to define the standards for bringing together digital islands, enabling consumers to enjoy their digital content when and where they want to in a simple and elegant fashion."
The series of announcements include:
-- Silicon Image launched Mobile High-Definition Link(TM) (MHL(TM))
technology, enabling mobile phones, digital cameras, media players and
other mobile devices to link directly to HDTVs so consumers can watch
and listen to content on HDTVs with pristine digital quality. MHL is a
low-pin-count link for low-power mobile devices that is compatible
with High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI).
-- Silicon Image launched the first three products that enable MHL. The
Silicon Image VastLane SiI9220 and SiI9222 are the first MHL
transmitters for mobile devices, and the VastLane SiI9290 is the first
MHL bridge chip for the docking station or dongle. Small mobile
devices have size and power-consumption limitations and typically have
a single small connector with too few pins to support standard 19-pin
HDMI connectors. With MHL, Silicon Image reduced the pin count from 19
to five, while handling all the formats that are required by HDMI.
-- Silicon Image delivered the industry's first quad-port input processor
for HDTVs, the PinnaClear(TM) SiI9155, based on Silicon Image's
innovative input processor architecture. This new input processor
architecture partitions the primary HDTV electronics into two highly
integrated parts - the input processor and the display processor.
Through the use of this new architecture, consumer electronics
manufacturers are no longer limited by suppliers' video processor
roadmaps and are able to add new innovations more quickly and
independently.
-- Silicon Image released the PinnaClear SiI9223 four-port receiver and
the SiI9127 two-port receiver, two new HDMI integrated receivers that
deliver the most advanced HDMI 1.3 HDTV features including 1080p Deep
Color and x.v.Color expanded color gamut. The new SiI9223 integrated
receiver supports Silicon Image's new Mobile High-Definition Link
(MHL) technology, enabling future mobile devices such as digital
cameras and camera phones to connect and display high-definition
content on digital televisions (DTVs).
-- Silicon Image announced new SteelVine(R) Serial ATA (SATA) II
controllers that are built on the new Unified Extensible Firmware
Interface (UEFI) model and support eSATA and FIS-based switching for
bandwidth aggregation. UEFI is a new model for the interface between
operating systems and platform firmware and provides a standard,
modern environment for booting an operating system and running
pre-boot applications. UEFI is currently used in Apple and Windows
based computers. The controllers support Native Command Queuing (NCQ),
out of order data delivery, asynchronous signal recovery, host
initiated power management and hotplug, as well as all of the advanced
features of SATA II.
-- Simplay Labs, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Silicon Image,
announced it has signed new partners, verified new consumer
electronics products, expanded its performance and interoperability
testing programs, and launched new HD solution suites. In addition,
Simplay Labs launched a new Simplay HD Consumer Support Service for
end-to-end Simplay HD verified products. This gives consumers who
purchase an end-to-end Simplay HD verified system the opportunity to
use complimentary installation assistance and troubleshooting services
to help them achieve the highest quality set-up, operation and
performance of their new HD home theater products.
