Motorola China Innovation Center Opens in Beijing

BEIJING, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the latest milestone in its China operations -- the inauguration of its R&D complex in Wangjing, Beijing.

The 92,000-sq.m complex, in collaboration with the Chaoyang District Government of Beijing, and Zhongguancun Electronic Zone Construction Co., Ltd commenced construction in March 2005. It consists of one 16-floor office tower, three low-rise R&D buildings (three storeys each) and one lab building and will accommodate more than 3,000 Motorola employees, including 2,000 R&D engineers.

Greg Brown, president and chief operating officer, Motorola Inc. says, "China has always been a very important part of our company's strategy and it continues to be. Today's event is another key milestone for Motorola. The inauguration of Motorola China R&D Complex will make the company better positioned to drive development of China's wireless industry and to achieve win-win results with local customers, consumers and partners."

The inauguration of the complex coincides with Motorola's 20th anniversary in China. Over these past years, in addition to introducing cutting-edge telecommunications technologies and products into the country, Motorola has build a powerful local R&D team that has delivered a host of innovations, represented by:

    -- A smartphone family including A388C, A760, "Ming" and A1200 developed
       by Motorola's Mobile Device China Design Center, which has achieved
       stunning market performance since commercial launch;
    -- China's first SEI CMM/CMMI Level 5 certificate, the highest recognition
       for software development organizations, acquired by Motorola Global
       Software Group China Center, which makes China the third country to
       receive CMM Level 5 after US and India; and
    -- The impressive R&D results achieved by Motorola Home & Networks
       Mobility China GSM/UMTS R&D Team, which, by evolving GSM, via GPRS and
       EDGE, to UMTS, have benefited some 105 customers in more than 50
       countries worldwide.

These three R&D institutes will move into the newly constructed complex in Wangjing. Other major labs and R&D centers that have settled down in this new location include:

    -- Motorola Beijing Compliance Lab, an ISO 17025 certified facility, will
       serve as Motorola's premier compliance test lab with expertise in EMC,
       RF and audio testing providing the product teams unparalleled global
       access to conformance testing, and the ability to certify products
       faster than ever before;
    -- Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) China Design Center;
    -- Customer Network Resolution Center (CNRC);
    -- Motorola Engineering Institute (MEI); and
    -- Antenna and EMI labs

Early in 1993, Motorola took initiative to establish its first R&D facility in China -- The Global Software Group China, which was also the first of its kind built by multinationals in China. Up to present, the company has invested US $800 million in R&D, building R&D centers and labs in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Hangzhou and employing more than 3,000 R&D staff. Focusing on advanced environment-conscious materials, software, mobile devices and solutions, Motorola China Research and Development Institute (MCRDI) has become one of the major R&D hubs of Motorola worldwide and the largest of its kind established by multinational corporations in China.
