Software Company Streamlines Health Care in Orange County

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- NetChemistry in conjunction with ELM Technologies, today announced that the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) has electronically linked all major hospitals in Orange County, CA using their ER Connect platform, an online patient health information database for the Medical Services for Indigents (MSI) Program.

ER Connect allows ED physicians across Orange County to instantly access MSI patient information at the point of care. Built with the input of ED Physicians, ER Connect retrieves and displays a patient's prior ED visit/hospitalization, prescription history, referrals, prior diagnosis, case management notes, and soon to be available lab and diagnostic results. ED Physicians can also share notes on individual patients in real time.

"Our goal is to arm the ED Physician with as much pertinent patient information as is available to enhance their ability to treat the patient at the 'point of care'," said Dan Castillo, MSI's Program Administrator. "This system will improve the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment received, while decreasing the duplication of services and related costs. It's a win-win for the patient and the healthcare system."

ER Connect is one element of the five-year vision adopted by Orange County and its hospitals to reduce both over-utilization of hospital emergency departments for non-acute services and the inefficient use of medical services in the MSI program. The five-year vision is focused on increasing the quality of life and well being of the Indigent patient, by enhancing the use of technology to manage the patient's activity within the Orange County health care system. "It's all about the patient," Castillo says. "Liberating the process from inefficient systems has been a long time coming."

About MSI

The Medical Services for Indigents (MSI) division of the Health Care Agency acts as a payer to hospitals, clinics, physicians, ambulance companies, home health providers, and other providers that serve eligible indigent patients. Through contracts with hospitals throughout Orange County, MSI administers the MSI Program for necessary medical care to county responsible patients. MSI also administers separate, non-mandated indigent medical services programs. Medical services are provided countywide.

About ER Connect

ER Connect aggregates disparate patient information throughout the healthcare community to ensure that ED physicians have the critical information needed in emergent situations. The patient information is organized and displayed through a web-based platform that integrates easily into any ED process flow, requiring little or no training. Key data elements typically include prescription history, laboratory diagnostic results, past emergency department visits, past hospitalizations and claims-based outpatient history.
