ZURICH, Switzerland and DALLAS, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) , a premier provider of business process outsourcing and information technology solutions, announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Alstom, a global leader in rail infrastructure, to deliver the ticketing system for Jerusalem's first tramway system. Financial details were not disclosed.
ACS will implement a central fare collection and magnetic and contactless ticketing system and maintain the field equipment as part of its 15-year contract. The project includes installing card customization machines, portable inspection units, ticket vending machines, and combined validation machines on board the Citadis trams manufactured by Alstom. With 23 stations, the Jerusalem tramway will eventually log 150,000 riders per day. The tramway is expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2009.
"Our industry expertise enables us to apply leading-edge innovation to public transportation systems in major metropolitan areas around the world," said Riet Cadonau, ACS Senior Managing Director for European Markets. "ACS acts as a strategic partner for industrial groups responsible for deploying and operating public transport networks."
Jerusalem is the latest city to deploy ACS' contactless ticketing system after Mexico City, Mexico; Marseilles and Lyon, France; Montreal, Canada; Melbourne, Australia; and Zurich, Switzerland. The Jerusalem project also demonstrates ACS' ability to integrate complex solutions that manage the complete ticketing chain from a central system to field equipment as part of long-term solution.
The Jerusalem fare collection system is a central component to the success of the 30-year "Build Operate Transfer" (BOT) contract signed with the Israeli authorities by City Pass, whose shareholders include Alstom.
