LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- 2007 International CES -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) , a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Coship Electronics Co., Ltd. has selected Broadcom as its primary silicon provider for next generation IP set-top box (STB) products. Coship is featuring Broadcom's market leading high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) IP set-top box silicon in its AnySight810 Series dual-mode IP/terrestrial digital STB targeted specifically to the Chinese STB market. According to In-Stat market research, China's IP set-top box market is rapidly growing, and by partnering with China's foremost supplier of STB products, Broadcom is ideally suited to expand its portfolio into this burgeoning market.
"The Chinese set-top box equipment market is estimated to be $380 million today and is forecasted to grow rapidly to $1.5 billion in 2010," said Rebecca Tan, Research Analyst for In-Stat. "This rapidly expanding market should represent a significant growth opportunity for Broadcom's STB business, given the company's leading technology and its key partnerships and significant design wins with leading Chinese manufacturers such as Coship."
The Chinese market is moving to dual-mode digital STBs that can be used for receiving cable, satellite or terrestrial broadcast content, as well as premium on-demand services from an IP network, by leveraging DSL or fiber to building connections. Through the integration of a leaner, more targeted feature set for this market, Broadcom(R) HD and SD SoC solutions are enabling Coship to deliver cost-effective platforms to operators deploying these hybrid networks. The new AnySight810 Series set-top box from Coship is an example of this emerging hybrid STB platform that offers a rich selection of digital terrestrial and IP content services to consumers.
"It is very exciting to be working with Coship Electronics, which is in a leading position to help drive new STB markets in China as one of the country's foremost manufacturers," said Daniel Marotta, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group. "We plan to continue working closely with Coship to provide more products and technology to the rapidly growing Chinese market, which in turn, will provide end-users and consumers with a richer and higher quality media experience."
"We are very pleased to be working with Broadcom, which we have recognized as offering the best technology and highest level of integration for IP set- top boxes," said Bright Yuan, CEO at Coship Electronics Co., Ltd. "As a result of this advanced technology, we plan to pursue new market opportunities in the hybrid set-top box market with solutions developed by Broadcom."
The key products used by Coship for its AnySight810 Series IP set-top box series include the Broadcom BCM7402 and BCM7452 products. Whether the requirement is for HD (BCM7402) or SD (BCM7452), these IP set-top box solutions feature integrated advanced video coding (AVC) (H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 10), MPEG-2 and VC-1 video decoding technology. The BCM7452 standard definition output device also provides support for MPEG-4 Part 2 and DivX video formats, has full support for HD decode with SD downscaling, and provides a comprehensive set of functionality that includes an Ethernet MAC/PHY, dual USB2.0 and HDMI support. Standard definition interlaced and progressive resolutions are supported, and the BCM7452 is pin compatible with the BCM7402 to enable easy customer reconfiguration of HD platforms to support lower cost SD-only applications.
Both the BCM7402 and BCM7452 feature a data transport processor, advanced audio decoder, 2D graphics processing, high quality video scaling, six video digital/analog converters (DACs), stereo high fidelity audio DACs, and peripheral control units that provide a host of STB control functions. The BCM7402 also features motion adaptive de-interlacing for high quality display of SD interlaced content on HD progressive displays.
