BELLEVUE, Wash., May 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Expedia.com(R), the world's leading online travel agency, recently commissioned its sixth annual "Vacation Deprivation" survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) and Ipsos Reid. The survey revealed that Americans (1) are likely to give back more than 574 million (2) vacation days in 2006, with each employed U.S. adult age 18 and older anticipated to leave an average of four vacation days on the table. The number of vacation days each American is estimated to abandon in 2006 increased by one additional day over last year, boosting the number of total unused vacation days by more than 150 million versus 2005.
One third (33 percent) of Americans do not always take all of their vacation days, despite more than one-third (36 percent) reporting that they feel better about their job and more productive upon returning from vacation.
"Vacation Deprivation in America is at an all-time high," says Sally McKenzie, vice president and general manager, Expedia.com. "There are incredible health and wellness benefits associated with time off from work. Americans should take a cue from their foreign counterparts and relish the vacation they earn."
This year, Expedia.com analyzed vacation habits among employed workers in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France and Australia. Compared to other countries included in the survey, Americans receive the fewest vacation days per year on average (14 days), compared to 17 days in Australia, 19 days in Canada, 24 days in Great Britain, 27 days in Germany and 39 days in France.
On average, Americans each leave four vacation days on the table, whereas other countries do a better job fitting in vacation days. Meanwhile, over a third of employed U.S. adults (38%) report regularly working more than 40 hours per week. This trend of overworked and vacation-deprived workers in America is both unfortunate, and in many ways, unsustainable.
-- France once again wins the distinction for taking and receiving the
most vacation days out of those countries surveyed. Employed adults in
France receive an average of 39 days of vacation each year, with two in
five (40%) taking a 3-4 week vacation during the summer holidays,
compared to the one-week getaway that two in five (40%) Americans take.
-- Germans are vacation lovers too, with the average employed adult using
26 of their 27 vacation days, placing vacation as a priority over work
(72% say they have not cancelled or postponed vacation plans in the
past due to work), and investing in their vacations (51% feel that a
good performance to price ratio is far more important than just buying
the vacation at the lowest price).
-- Australians also value their time away from work. About two in five
(39%) employed Australian adults anticipate using most of their
vacation time by taking at least one vacation lasting up to two full
weeks, compared to the one-week getaway that 40 percent of Americans
take.
-- Like many workers, Canadians benefit greatly from their vacation time.
44 percent of employed Canadian adults reported feeling better about
their jobs and feeling more productive upon returning from vacation,
while 55 percent say they feel rested, rejuvenated and reconnected to
their personal life.
Throughout the six years that Expedia.com has conducted the Vacation Deprivation survey, the U.S. has long-held the dismaying distinction of being the country with the worst vacationing habits.
The label has become even more pronounced this year, with employed workers in the United States leaving an extra day of vacation on the table in 2006 (4 days in 2006 versus 3 days in 2005) despite showing an increase in average vacation days received (14 days in 2006 versus 12 days in 2005). In addition, many U.S. adults also responded that they've cancelled or postponed vacation plans because of work (19%).

Harris Interactive(R) fielded the online survey on behalf of Expedia.com between March 30 and April 7, 2006 among nationwide cross-sections of 2,327 adults age 18+ in the United States, 1,905 adults aged 16+ in Great Britain, 2,197 adults aged 16+ in France, 2,094 adults aged 16+ in Germany, and 1,031 adults aged 16+ in Australia. The European data were weighted to be representative of the total adult populations of each country on the basis of region, age, sex, education, income and propensity to be online. The U.S. data were weighted to be representative of the total U.S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity and propensity to be online.
In theory, with probability samples of this size, one can say with 95 percent certainty that the results for the English, French and German samples have a sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points and sampling error for the U.S. and Australian samples is plus or minus 3 percentage points. Sampling error for the following sub-sample results: U.S. employed adults (1,491), British employed adults (1,267), French employed adults (1,343), German employed adults (1,329), and Australian employed adults (686) is higher and varies. This online sample is not a probability sample.

Canada
Ipsos-Reid conducted the Canadian poll from April 20th - 27th, 2006. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1020 employed adult Canadians was interviewed online. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire employed adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to Census information.
