American Chemistry Council: U.S. PIRG Report Is Not Based on Science

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) on October 12 released a report on baby products that first and foremost should not be equated with a scientific study. The U.S. PIRG report has not been peer reviewed. It is an advocacy piece rather than a scientific study.

The report is an attack on a specific product used in baby toys. It equates detection of a substance with harm, which is not supported by science.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) urges consumers to review and judge scientific information regarding the safety of phthalates and other chemical products from reliable sources such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Information and data from recent studies have clearly indicated that exposures to phthalates are well below federal safety levels. After more than a half century of use and numerous scientific reviews, there appears to be no reliable evidence that phthalates have ever harmed anyone.
