CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- More than 40 professional sports, movie and television personalities will team up with numerous supporters of breast-cancer research in the 12th Annual American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Weekend, today through Sunday (Oct. 5-8), at the Four Seasons Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
American Airlines, a founding member of the global oneworld(R) Alliance, is the title sponsor of the four-day event, which includes various competitive and non-competitive activities at Aviara Golf Club, Delmar Country Club and the Aviara Tennis Center. It is held in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing education, screening and research.
Among the celebrities scheduled to participate in this year's American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Weekend: actors and TV personalities Jason Priestley, Kim Alexis, Judd Nelson, Julie Moran, Jim Sikking, Jonathan Banks, and Wendie Malick; baseball legends Brooks Robinson, Rollie Fingers, Fred Lynn, and Wally Joyner; tennis Hall of Famer Rod Laver; hockey greats Bobby Orr, Rod Gilbert, and Ron Duguay; football standouts Jason Sehorn, Matt Bahr, Earl Morrall and Garo Yepremian; basketball legends Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, and Sam Jones; ladies' professional golfers Jane Blalock and Sally Little; and many others.
"Thanks to the efforts of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, breast cancer deaths have declined since 1990," said David Cush, Senior Vice President - Global Sales at American Airlines. "It is believed that this decline is due in part to increased awareness, early detection, and improved screening methods.
"American Airlines is proud to support the Komen Foundation in its efforts to forge ahead through new discoveries and enhanced research, which we hope will systematically make breast cancer a disease of the past," Cush said. "Through our corporate support in this event and our employees' support in local events throughout the country - such as the Komen Walks and Races for The Cure - the people of American Airlines are determined to help make a difference in the quest for finding a cure."
The American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Weekend has contributed nearly $6 million to the Komen Foundation over the past 11 years through the fees paid by participants, as well as through the bidding for specialty items that are annually donated for auction.
