DFW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Texas, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- All aboard the DFW auction train! Online bidders from across the globe have a unique opportunity to bid on a piece of airport history. Sixty of DFW's authentic Airport Train Cars are the latest addition to a list of nearly 200 auction items available online from the Airport. After 31 years of dedicated service, the Airport Train, which was originally known as AirTrans, was replaced by Skylink -- the world's largest automated people mover system earlier this year.
While servicing DFW, these train cars made history by pioneering the way for automated mass transit -- covering a cumulative 97-million miles and carrying more than 250 million passengers. Now that the trains have been retired, members of the public are provided with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own their very own Airport Train! Each train car measures 10'2" tall, 7'2" wide, and 22'2" long with an empty weight of 14,000 pounds.
In addition to the trains, other auction items are available, including tractors, trailers, police motorcycles, ambulances, cars, trucks, SUVs and much more.
"Proceeds from this online auction will reimburse the fund that originally paid for the equipment or item," said John Wesley White, Vice President of Procurement and Materials Management at DFW.
The Airport has a successful track record when it comes to online auctions. Last spring's auction for the Capital Development Program generated $512,000. Prior to that in 2004, DFW held the largest-ever all-Internet auction that exceeded expectations -- netting $322,036.
Online bidding, along with a complete list of auction items, may be accessed from now until 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 31 by visiting http://www.dfwairport.com/ or http://www.renebates.com/ . The Airport auction began August 12.
Items are available for inspection at DFW's Salvage Yard, located at 2400 E. Airfield Drive. Items may be viewed in person during the following times: Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (August 15-19, August 22-26 and August 29-30). The train cars have not been moved from the original train yard, but patrons interested in viewing them will be directed to their location.
