AVIATION WEEK's DTI Launches Defense 2009

Integrated print and online resource outlines global conflict spots, technologies, budgets and programs predicted for 2009 in comprehensive report

NEW YORK, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The January issue of Defense Technology International (DTI), published by AVIATION WEEK, covers "Defense 2009" in detail with special reports from around the world and analyses of new technologies, top defense budgets, and major programs. Led by DTI Editor-in-Chief Bill Sweetman, this debut issue will be a regular fixture in the magazine's editorial calendar in 2010 and beyond. It is accompanied by an interactive defense microsite, http://aviationweek.com/defense2009, and will be followed by the Defense Technology & Requirements Conference on March 11-12 in Washington, DC.

"We are pairing the print magazine and conference with the complementary strengths of online content, interactive tools, community building and blogging to provide a resource that will stay current throughout the year," said Bill Sweetman. He outlines the editorial focus in the issue's introduction: "Conflict drives national policy and budgets. Budgets fund programs, more or less adequately. Developments reflect national needs and new technologies -- both those that have broken through into general use and those that are on the horizon. And those technologies depend on agile, innovative enterprises to turn them into reality. That, simply, is the narrative of Defense 2009."

A World Conflict Guide, found on pp. 29-32 and in a companion web tool, reviews hot conflict spots with images, outlines regional histories in a table, and provides deeper analysis through a clickable map and insightful articles. These issues will drive global military actions and defense news throughout the coming year.

Issues in the following countries and regions are covered in this comprehensive defense report: Afghanistan, Africa, China, France, Georgia, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Latin America, Pakistan, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Defense budgets and major programs from several of these countries are also discussed, including high-performance jets and stealth ships, such as the F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and Eurofighter Typhoon; ballistic missile defense programs; the U.K.'s Future Rapid Effect System (FRES) program; aircraft carrier plans; and U.S. Virginia-class subs.

Emerging and developing technologies covered in the report include "satellite killers" that can destroy objects in space, increasingly sophisticated reconnaissance satellites and surveillance aircraft, rotor-powered "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" (UAVs), sea-based missile defense, "Integrated Advanced Soldier" (IAS) systems that connect soldiers to digital networks, "All-Around Protection" systems that can engage multiple attacks simultaneously, the "Soldier-Wearable Acoustic Targeting System" that quickly calculates the direction and distance of a gunshot to accurately locate snipers, terrorist bomb concoctions and techniques, and more.

The issue also includes reports on the new U.S. administration under President-Elect Obama, companies to watch, upcoming defense events, book reviews, and guest columns from industry experts.
