Aerojet Receives Community Energy Award

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, today received the prestigious Community Energy Award from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). The SMUD Community Energy Award honors customers who share SMUD's values of energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity, and who work with SMUD to turn these beliefs into actions by managing energy usage, implementing energy efficient upgrades to facilities, and reducing the amount of energy generated in the Sacramento region.

SMUD recognized Aerojet for its pilot testing and installation of an alternative environmental remediation system which relies on mixing hydrogen peroxide and ozone (HiPOx) -- rather than on ultraviolet (UV) light. Following the installation in December 2006 of the HiPOx system in one of Aerojet's groundwater extraction and treatment (GET) facilities, the GET's energy usage has dropped from 200 kilowatts per hour to 80 kilowatts per hour, a savings of 120 kilowatts per hour. The amount of energy saved at the facility in just two days equals the amount of energy used by the average California household in one year.

In addition to enhanced efficiencies, the alternative system requires less consumables such as UV lamps, quartz and coolers. Aerojet estimates that the system will result in an approximate annual savings of $130,000 in energy, maintenance and operations costs. SMUD also provided a $35,000 incentive to support the installation of the HiPOx system, which is the maximum incentive that SMUD offered.

"We continually strive to reduce its ancillary impacts on the environment, including energy consumption, while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its remediation technologies," said Chris Fennessy, Aerojet's site remediation engineering manager responsible for the installation and operation of the HiPOx system. "SMUD is a valuable partner in these efforts and we are honored to receive this recognition."

"Aerojet is an excellent example of a SMUD customer doing its part to help our community by reducing its energy use," said Susan Patterson, SMUD Board President and Ward 2 Director. "Hopefully, more customers will follow Aerojet's lead and take advantage of SMUD programs that can help them save money and benefit the entire community."
